In the town of Aix-en-Provence is a Christmas Market that sells figurines called "Santons." These hand-painted nativity figurines are made of clay and are individually crafted. There are unlikely characters, farmers, butchers, bakers, fisherman and even lavender collectors.
CARCASSONE, FRANCE
We docked at Montpellier (Sete) and took an all-day tour of the medieval Fortified Town of Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carcassonne is located about two hours south Montpellier.
Considered Impregnable for centuries
Two concentric walls circle and enclose the 27-acre medieval town.
Narrow cobble-stone streets, a draw bridge and 52 towers.
12th century Gothic Romanesque Basilica of Saint Nazaire is found within the walls of the city.
The wood encircled towers were designed to attack enemies from above with arrows and even boiling oil.
After lunch, we used our free time to tour the Counts Castle which included access to the walkways atop the fortified walls overlooking the medieval city.
