Chimney Rock and Downtown Durango

Chimney Rock National Monument 1025-1075

Chimney Rock was designated as a national monument in 2012, one of only 11 managed by the US Forest Service.
After a stop at the Visitor Center, we drove the steep gravel road up to a parking lot near the top of the mesa.
The monument was named after this interesting chimney shaped geographic feature.
We took the 2/3-mile Great House Pueblo Trail.
The trail runs along a 7600-foot-high mesa with steep drop-offs along each side.
The trail terminates at the ruins and a "Made it to the top" sign.
It is believed that the Ancestral Pueblo people communicated with residents of Chaco Canyon, 90 miles away using signal fires. The possibility of this has recently been tested and proven.

Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum

No trip to Durango could be considered complete without at least viewing the narrow-gauge railway for which the town is famous.
This train runs several trips daily between Durango and Silverton.
This robust free museum is housed in the 15 stall Roundhouse.
We enjoyed a great lunch at the authentic Diamond Belle Saloon within the historic Strater Hotel.
